SACRAMENTO – On Monday August 8th, members of the California Legislature played in their annual bi-partisan Legislative Softball event. California Democrats and Republicans will play for nine innings of softball in a matchup of NorCal vs. SoCal.

Proceeds from the event, which amounted to more than $42,000, will benefit Sacramento’s Mustard Seed School.

Mustard Seed is a free private school for children ages 3-15 years-old who are currently homeless. The school is part of Sacramento’s Loaves and Fishes organization and provides children with a safe space, while their parents access other services provided by the organization. These services include breakfast and lunch meals, mental health services, housing information, and showers.

“Mustard Seed is a great school supporting our homeless students and their families,” said Assemblymember Kevin McCarty. “I am proud the legislature has been able to prioritize this event since the first ever game in 2000, and help the non-profit organization continue to change the lives of its students. We need more schools like this in our communities. I want to thank Assemblymembers Brian Maienschein, Robert Rivas, and Jordan Cunningham for their partnership in organizing the annual event.”

“On behalf of the Mustard Seed School we would like to thank all the California State Assemby members for supporting our school,” said Mustard Seed School Director Lucia Vega. “With this donation we are able to purchase new classroom materials such as tables, desk, chairs and shelves along with school supplies and books for the classrooms or students. Sometimes we are able to take the students on special learning field trips and give them new experiences to remember. We could not be able to provide a safe and nurturing environment without your support. Thank you to all of you for your donation!”

This year, team NorCal won with the final score being 16-8.
