A Spring Update from Maggy Krell

Asm. Krell Newsletter Graphic

Hello, Assembly District 6!

My team and I have been busy this spring! It goes without saying our community is facing tough times due to profound economic uncertainty at both the federal and state level. As we navigate that, we’re making progress on a package of bills that, if signed into law, would improve access to services for mentally ill and homeless and those battling addiction, protect access to reproductive healthcare, put sensible guardrails against the irresponsible development and use of Artificial Intelligence, and protect victims of sex trafficking, especially children.

You also may have seen my team and I out and about in the community. I am proud to represent Sacramento, and one of my favorite parts of this job has been getting to meet folks from all different parts of the greater Sacramento region.

We have loved partnering on community projects, from sorting donations at the Food Bank, to park clean ups, to building with Habitat for Humanity in South Sacramento, to conducting job interviews and a clothing drive with Women’s Empowerment. Here’s a few pictures from one of our favorite projects: the cabin we renovated at the Grove – which provides housing for foster youth just entering adulthood:

Legislative Updates: Our Bills Pass the Assembly

Several of our bills have now cleared the halfway point in the legislative process, passing from the Assembly and moving on to the Senate.

Right now, thousands of mostly women and girls are being bought and sold for sex all across California. At the beginning of this year I worked with a coalition of survivor-leaders to write a bill to better protect victims and go after the sleazy men who buy them for sex.

To learn more about sex trafficking in the Sacramento region, check out KCRA’s short documentary, Escaping the Blade.

Here are recent news articles from KCRA 3 and The Sacramento Bee highlighting this important bill which is now being considered in the Senate.

Accessing reproductive healthcare

We’ve fought for years to guarantee abortion access – and reproductive healthcare more broadly – as a constitutional right in California. Despite a new federal administration hostile to reproductive healthcare, we’re continuing to defend access in California.

My bill, sponsored by Planned Parenthood and other healthcare organizations, ensures that patients in California will have access to medication abortion when they need it. I will continue to support efforts to protect and fund reproductive healthcare, because constitutional rights are only meaningful if we can access them.

Mental health services for vulnerable populations
Too many people experiencing homelessness and severe mental illness are suffering on our streets, rather than being admitted into the type of wrap around care they need. My mental healthcare bill package streamlines access for the neediest patients to participate in Full Service Partnership Programs, draws on Proposition 1 funding to support these individuals, and allows Emergency Room physicians to make critical care decisions when patients are unable to care for themselves or others.

Community Highlights

Holocaust Remembrance

The Assembly spent a day in solemn remembrance of the Holocaust. I welcomed Sonia Edwards to join me. Sonia’s mother Andra Bucci was one of the youngest survivors of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp and now tells her story of survival to the public. We remember the Holocaust to make sure we never repeat that dark chapter of our history – that is our duty to survivors like her.

We must never forget.

Woman of the Year: Sawan Vaden

I had the honor of recognizing Sawan Vaden as Assembly District 6’s Woman of the Year. As Executive Director of Community Against Sexual Harm Sacramento, Sawan has helped people in our community escape the cycle of sex trafficking and go on to heal and rebuild their lives.

Women’s Empowerment Drive

In February, we teamed up with the organization Women’s Empowerment to support their work helping women who are homeless get a job. We collected several boxes of women’s professional clothes for donation, and spent a day holding practice job interviews with Women’s Empowerment’s clients.

Kasie Ruiz: McClatchy High Hero

Kasie has spent years helping special education students thrive at McClatchy High. I was proud to honor her unwavering commitment to our children.

Wildfire Relief Fundraiser

In the wake of the devastating LA wildfires in January, I hosted a fundraiser to support victims. Local favorite Remedy 7 played to a packed house at the Torch Club, and we raised money to help wildfire victims – a night of good music for a great cause.

Nonprofit of the Year: St. John’s Program for Real Change

I recognized St. John’s as the Assembly District 6 Nonprofit of the Year for their work supporting formerly homeless women and children with housing, employment training, and comprehensive services. Supporting up to 550 clients each year, they are a true model for creating lasting change in people’s lives.
