Governor signs bill that will help ensure accountability for AI harm

SACRAMENTO – Assemblywoman Maggy Krell (D-Sacramento) applauded the Governor’s signing of Assembly Bill 316, her bill to establish a framework for incentivizing responsible development and use of autonomous Artificial Intelligence applications.

“Without responsible development and use, AI has clear potential to be dangerous. We’ve already seen that danger play out in multiple cases where AI has coaxed children into self-harm or even suicide. AB 316 will help ensure there is accountability in cases where AI causes harm. This is a simple but powerful guardrail for promoting responsible use of AI products that will hold up as the technology continues to evolve. I’m grateful to the Governor for signing this bill and to all our sponsors.”

AB 316 prohibits civil defendants who have developed, modified, or used artificial intelligence that is alleged to have caused harm to a plaintiff from asserting as a defense that the artificial intelligence autonomously caused harm to the plaintiff.
