SACRAMENTO –Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (D – Sacramento) announced today the Sacramento area recipients of Urban Forestry Grants awarded by CAL FIRE. These grants were awarded statewide for the purpose of improving urban forests and reducing greenhouse gas emissions while beautifying California for generations to come.
“Urban Forestry Grants helps trees and new plantings that in turn provide us with cleaner air and water, a reduction of storm water run-off, and cooler summer temperatures,” said Assemblymember McCarty. “Trees play a vital role in reducing greenhouse gasses and help maintain Sacramento’s reputation as the City of Trees.”
Two grants – Green Innovations and Urban Wood & Biomass Utilization were awarded to the Sacramento Tree Foundation (STF), serving Sacramento City and County. Also, Tree Davis, serving West Sacramento, was awarded the Green Trees for the Golden State award.
The Urban Forestry grants support AB 32, the California Global Solutions Act which requires the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission to 1990 levels by 2020. The results would lead to energy efficiency improvements, expand the use of renewal energy resources, reduce waste, and lower risks associated with climate change.
Overall, CAL FIRE awarded almost $16 million in grants to 33 entities for different projects around the state of California this year. The funding for the grants was appropriated from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. The mission of the CAL FIRE’s Urban Forestry Program is to lead the effort to advance the development of sustainable urban and community forests in California.
