Assemblymembers McCarty and Medina Provide Statement on University of California Enrollment Numbers and Announce Legislation

For immediate release:

(SACRAMENTO, CA)— Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento), chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee No. 2 and Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside), chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, issued the following statement regarding the University of California enrollment data:

"It’s disappointing the UC continues their trend of increasing enrollment for out of state students at the expense of California’s students," said Assemblymember McCarty. "Particularly considering UC's commitment to comply with the Budget Act and add 5,000 California students."

"This morning UC quietly released enrollment data showing that, despite a commitment to serve more California students, enrollments actually decreased by 1,600 Californians in fall of 2015" said Assemblymember Medina. "Additionally, nonresident enrollment increased by 4,700 students. With this growth, nonresident students now comprise 15.5% of UC's undergraduate population."

"Last year, I authored AB 1370 to cap UC nonresident enrollment and to require funding from nonresidents to be used to increase access for Californians," noted Assemblymember Medina. "I agreed to hold my bill in the Senate to allow UC to move forward with internal controls. The numbers released today are troubling. They indicate that statutory and budgetary requirements are necessary to ensure UC fulfills its commitment to California students."

"Assemblymember Medina and I will shortly introduce legislation and a budget proposal that will prevent UC from continuing to grow its nonresident population and displacing California students." said Assemblymember McCarty.
