(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, Health Education Council (HEC) was honored by Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento) as nonprofit of the year for the 7th Assembly District.
“I am encouraged by HEC’s continuing efforts to address preventable causes of death plaguing our low-income and diverse communities. The variety of programs they offer, including the Sacramento Minority Youth Violence Prevention initiative, providing hundreds of residents access to healthy foods in Del Paso Heights through various produce distributions and healthy retail programs, and providing free health fair and health screening opportunities to low-income families, demonstrates a true understanding of the complex needs of disadvantaged communities in the Sacramento region,” said Assemblymember McCarty.
The Inaugural California Nonprofits Day was hosted by the California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits), a statewide alliance of over 10,000 organizations, representing and promoting California’s growing nonprofit sector and working to bring the full power of nonprofits to strengthening communities. State legislators honored and celebrated nonprofit leaders from all over the state, and officially proclaimed June 22nd as California Nonprofits Day.
According to a study conducted by CalNonProfits, nonprofits rank as the 4th largest industry in California by employment, and make up 1/6 of California’s Gross State Product.
