(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (D – Sacramento), Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance issued the following statement after the University of California (UC) released its 2016 undergraduate enrollment and fall 2017 undergraduate application data.
"Today’s University of California undergraduate enrollment and application data is great news for California students and for California’s long term economic health,” said Assemblymember McCarty. “In the last two years alone, legislative oversight and critical budget investments have increased and prioritized California resident access to the UC. While I am encouraged by the increased number of California residents enrolling in the UC, more work is needed to ensure that the UC properly balances the needs of California resident students and nonresidents students. I am committed to working with the UC, Governor Brown and legislative leaders in the coming year to ensure that more California residents are able to access and benefit from the University of California."
As Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance, McCarty led the effort to increase student enrollment of California residents at the UC, calling upon the university to enroll at least 10,000 additional California undergraduates over the next three years.
Kevin McCarty represents California’s 7th Assembly District, which include the cities and communities of Antelope, Elverta, North Highlands, Rio Linda, Sacramento and West Sacramento.
