(SACRAMENTO) - Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (D – Sacramento) today released the following statement after Governor Jerry Brown (D – California) signed AB 19 into law. The legislation, joint authored by Assemblymembers Miguel Santiago (D – Los Angeles), David Chiu (D – San Francisco) and McCarty, will make the first year of community college free for all first time, full time community college students in California.
"Today's approval of AB 19 is a big win for California's students, economy and for our state's long term global competitiveness. Too many California college students find themselves burdened with crippling education debt, making it difficult for these students to buy a home, raise a family and contribute to our economy."
"AB 19 is a central part of the Assembly Democratic Caucus' "Degrees Not Debt" plan designed to lower and eventually eliminate higher education debt for students. As Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance, I am eager to work with my legislative colleagues and the Governor in the coming year to craft a responsible finance plan to make sure that the dream of debt free college can come true for California students."
