Assemblymember Kevin McCarty Releases Statement on Governor Newsom’s 2019-20 Proposed Budget

For immediate release:

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento), Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance released the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s proposed 2019-20 state budget.

“I applaud Governor Newsom’s 2019 budget proposal—reflecting his promises to save for a rainy day and invest in our future. The budget proposal makes the necessary investments in public education from early childhood education to K-12 schools to higher education.

There are a lot of proposals to be encouraged about including Childcare, Early Childhood Education, Universal Preschool, Free Community College expansion, increased UC/CSU support, and significant one-time and ongoing K-12 funding increases. These actions would help our schools deliver more resources to our classrooms and help school districts deal with the increased retirement costs.

As Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance, I look forward to working with my legislative colleagues and the Governor to pass an on-time, balanced budget that will fulfill California’s promise of creating a world class educational system”

Governor Newsom’s $209 billion budget includes $144 billion in general fund spending. A summary of Governor Newsom’s full budget proposal can be viewed here: www.ebudget.ca.gov
