Assemblymember Kevin McCarty and Senator Richard Pan to present $3 million check to SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity

For immediate release:

(Sacramento, Calif) - Assemblymember Kevin McCarty and Senator Richard Pan will be presenting the SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity (MOSAC) a $3 million check on Wednesday, September 22nd at 9:30am.

MOSAC is a newly built science center, located in the historic power station on the Sacramento River.

The museum plans to remove barriers for a Science, Technologies, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) learning ecosystem that broadens and enriches each learner’s personal journey.

Their goal is to inspire more students to enter the STEAM careers and to create a more science literate community.

The funds from Assemblymember McCarty and Senator Pan were made possible through the 2021 California budget and will be used for the design and development of public health educational programs and exhibits. Content will focus on overall physical health and well-being, mental health, nutrition and advances in medical technologies.

“SMUD MOSAC is a great introduction into the STEAM fields for our youth,” said Assemblymember McCarty. “Experiencing what the museum offers, can open their minds up to a future in STEAM, and develop them into scientists, engineers, mathematicians and the like; important leaders we will certainly need in this world.”

“This award represents critical funding for MOSAC. The challenges of our current times slowed fundraising just as we were preparing to open,” said MOSAC Executive Director, Michele Wong. “The funding from the state will allow us to open our new science center as fully envisioned.  MOSAC is grateful for the support from Senator Pan and Assembly Member McCarty, who have long supported us and now have positioned us to deliver an outstanding experience as the epicenter of science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) education for Sacramento and the region."
