(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) – Governor Newsom has signed AB 1377 which requires UC and CSU to plan for more student housing to accommodate current students and future enrollment growth goals.
Research from the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC), shows that California is facing a degree shortage of roughly 1 million graduates. California's public colleges and universities need to accommodate this future enrollment growth and provide adequate student housing in order to meet that shortage.
“Housing makes up nearly half the total cost of attending college, driving high levels of student housing insecurity,” said Assemblymember Kevin McCarty. "If students do not have access to affordable housing, how are they going to be able to focus on their education? To achieve the state’s goals of growing enrollment and expanding equitable access to higher education, the UC and CSU must accommodate student growth with enough affordable housing options.”
AB 1377 will ensure that the UC and CSU have a plan to meet student housing needs, helping students focus on their education, rather than worrying about where they can rest their heads.
A prior version of AB 1377 included a multi-billion dollar student housing fund which was rolled into the state budget resulting in a $2 billion investment to support enrollment growth and provide housing at UC, CSU, and community colleges.
