SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Kevin McCarty has presented a $1 million check to Hiram Johnson High School (HJHS) for a new Sports program, as well as a new Career and Technical Education program.
Working with experienced instructors from MEP Career Pathways, Career and Technical Education (CTE) program at HJHS will allow students to apply their knowledge in class into real life, providing valuable career exposure and options for students during high school and upon graduating. The courses consist of Drafting and Design; Engineering, Construction and Design; Construction Technology; and Engineering Technology.
The program has already proven successful at other high schools and will give students at HJHS an opportunity to solve real world problems through industry sponsored project-focused experiences.
The Sports Program is a partnership with the Morton Golf Foundation, and will be working with the high school to bring a “First Tee” type of golf and learning center to a community that doesn’t have a golf course. This will give students from an underserved community free access to golf, and mentors who will teach them about the game of life through the game of golf.
“CTE courses are a great way for students to gain career exposure. It allows students to receive the knowledge they will need to go straight into the workforce after graduating high school,” said Assemblymember Kevin McCarty. “Additionally, sports can have a big impact on our youth, especially the game of golf. The sports program at the high school can teach students important values and life lessons.”
“These CTE courses will give students at Hiram Johnson High School valuable experience in some of the most in-demand industries,” said Senator Dr. Richard Pan. “This important investment will make a big impact in the lives of our students and our entire community.”
“The funds that this check represents will improve the Hiram Johnson campus and benefit students at this school for many years to come, said Hiram Johnson High School Principal Garrett Kirkland. “It also represents the commitments from leaders and community partners to support our students in their preparation for college and careers. I am excited to see how this investment will benefit our campus and the lives of our students.”
