Assemblymember Kevin McCarty’s bill to update California’s electrical grid signed by Governor

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Kevin McCarty’s (D-Sacramento) Electrical Grid Preparation bill has been signed by Governor Gavin Newsom.

AB 2700 is part of the Governor’s climate package that will dramatically reduce climate pollution; reduce greenhouse gas emissions to below 1990 levels; protect communities from the negative impacts of the oil industry; establish the pathway toward the state’s clean energy future and advance technology to remove carbon pollution.

Specifically, AB 2700 will keep California on track to achieve its air quality and climate goals, enabling proactive planning, and ensuring the electrical grid is prepared to support the state’s ban on new gas-powered vehicles by 2035.

“To realize the state’s climate goals, California must ensure its electrical grid is adequately prepared for the increase in demand for electricity,” said Assemblymember Kevin McCarty. “I am pleased to see the Governor sign this major climate package, which I fully supported. This will help California fight climate change, and keep residents safe from the harmful effects of air pollution.”

A report from the American Lung Association estimates that the transition to zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) will prevent nearly 2,000 premature deaths in California, and save an estimated $22 billion in health-related costs by 2050 as a result of the decrease in pollution.
