(Sacramento) – California State Assemblymember David Chiu (D-San Francisco) joined several of his legislative colleagues at a news conference urging undocumented immigrants to get driver’s licenses, which is now possible in California, thanks to the Safe and Responsible Driver Act (AB 60). The news conference, which was held at the State Capitol in Sacramento, was prompted by the visit of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, filmmaker and founder of Define America, Jose Antonio Vargas. Vargas came to the Capitol to highlight why AB 60 and the President’s Immigration Accountability Executive Action are not just important to the Latino community, but are critical to the Asian Pacific Islander community as well.
Assemblymember Chiu, the son of immigrants, reminded us that in his Assembly District alone, there at about 36 thousand undocumented immigrants. He assured those in the immigrant community who might be afraid to get their driver’s licenses that lawmakers are behind them.
“It is safe, it is important, it is critical that you get a driver’s license if it is something that you need,” said Assemblymember Chiu.
